Maruti Suzuki India Limited has forged a strategic partnership with the Tamil Nadu Transport Department to revolutionize the state’s driving license testing infrastructure. The collaboration will introduce 10 Automated Driving Test Tracks (ADTTs) across Tamil Nadu, marking a significant advancement in road safety evaluation and license issuance processes.
Digital Transformation of Driving Tests in Tamil Nadu
The newly announced Automated Driving Test Tracks represent a major shift from traditional manual testing methods to technology-driven assessments. These state-of-the-art facilities will eliminate human bias and subjective evaluation, ensuring every applicant undergoes standardized, transparent testing procedures aligned with Central Motor Vehicle Rules.
The Memorandum of Agreement was signed in the presence of Thiru S.S. Sivasankar, Minister for Transport and Electricity, alongside Thiru Dheeraj Kumar, IAS, Home Secretary. Tmt. R. Gajalakshmi, IAS, Transport and Road Safety Commissioner, and Mr. Tarun Agarwal, Senior Vice President of CSR at Maruti Suzuki, formalized the historic agreement.
Strategic Locations Across Tamil Nadu
The Transport Department has strategically identified ten locations based on license issuance volume and urban connectivity patterns. The Automated Driving Test Tracks will be established in:
Marthandam, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore (Central), Madurai (North), Tuticorin, Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Tiruvannamalai, Sivagangai, and Trichy (West). These locations ensure maximum accessibility for driving license applicants across the state, reducing travel time and improving service delivery.
Advanced Technology Integration
The new testing infrastructure incorporates cutting-edge digital technologies to ensure objective evaluation. Each ADTT utilizes video analytics for comprehensive monitoring, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) for precise tracking, and HAMS (Harnessing Automobiles for Safety) technologies for automated assessment.
This sensor-based evaluation system tracks every aspect of driving performance—from vehicle control and traffic rule adherence to situational awareness and emergency response. The digital assessment framework guarantees that only genuinely qualified applicants receive driving licenses, enhancing overall road safety standards.
Commitment to Road Safety Excellence
Minister S.S. Sivasankar praised the initiative, emphasizing its potential to reinforce disciplined driving culture and strengthen Tamil Nadu’s road safety framework. The collaboration represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing road safety challenges through technological innovation.
Mr. Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer of Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, highlighted the project’s alignment with the company’s comprehensive “5Es” road safety approach—Education, Evaluation, Enforcement, Engineering, and Emergency Care. This holistic framework addresses road safety from multiple dimensions, creating lasting impact.
Expanding National Footprint
Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to road safety extends far beyond Tamil Nadu. The automotive giant has already established 45 ADTTs across India and recently partnered with Rajasthan to develop 21 additional facilities. With Tamil Nadu’s 10 new tracks, the company’s nationwide network will expand to an impressive 76 automated testing facilities.
Beyond testing infrastructure, Maruti Suzuki operates 8 Institutes of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTRs) and 23 Road Safety Knowledge Centres (RSKCs) throughout India. This comprehensive ecosystem demonstrates the company’s sustained commitment to creating responsible, skilled road users.
Impact on Road Safety Standards
The introduction of Automated Driving Test Tracks in Tamil Nadu is expected to significantly reduce road accidents caused by inadequately trained drivers. By ensuring rigorous, standardized testing procedures, the initiative addresses a critical gap in India’s road safety infrastructure.
The automated system eliminates corruption and favoritism often associated with manual testing, ensuring merit-based license issuance. This transparency builds public trust in the licensing system while improving overall driver competency across the state.
Future of Driver Training and Testing
This collaboration between Maruti Suzuki and Tamil Nadu’s Transport Department sets a benchmark for other states to follow. As automated testing becomes the norm, India moves closer to achieving world-class road safety standards and reducing its alarming accident statistics.
The partnership exemplifies successful public-private collaboration in addressing critical social challenges, demonstrating how corporate social responsibility initiatives can create meaningful, scalable impact when aligned with government priorities.
